Ring in the New Year with a First Day Hike
Close your eyes and imagine fresh winter air, a warm pair of gloves, and leaves crunching underfoot — this could be your New Year’s Day experience. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, park staff are leading free First Day Hikes with treats at state parks throughout Washington. No Discover Pass is needed to park on state lands on January 1st!
Hikes and snowshoe adventures of varying lengths and difficulty levels are available this year, and many are beginner-friendly. History and geology buffs will love the fun facts rangers share on guided hikes. If you’re brave, opt to join the polar plunge group at Maryhill State Park. All participating parks even offer special perks, like hot chocolate and snacks, courtesy of the Foundation.
Don’t forget — share your enchanting and unforgettable First Day adventures with us for a chance to win prizes! Everyone who makes it out to a state park on January 1st, whether for a ranger-led or self-guided excursion, is eligible to enter our First Day Hike Photo Contest. You have until January 5th to submit photos of your magical winter experiences this year.
Savor the reflection, peace, and connection of New Year’s Day at a state park. Whether you prefer ranger-led or self-guided hikes, vigorous activity or a leisurely stroll, there is a First Day experience for everyone.
