3 Fun Ways to Enjoy Winter Weekends in State Parks

It’s cold outside! But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the winter wonderland in Washington State Parks. There are so many activities to choose from that’ll be sure to fill your winter weekends with play, joy, and fun. 

Sno-Parks

Grab your winter jacket, hat, and mittens, and hit one of Washington’s Sno-Parks for a day of outdoor adventure. Various Sno-Parks offer designated areas for family-friendly snow play, and trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and dog sledding. 

Sno-Parks are different from state parks because they cross both state and federal lands. They are coordinated by the Winter Recreation Program at Washington State Parks in partnership with other agencies and private landowners. 

Sno-Parks with family-friendly areas to play in the snow include:

• Hyak Sno-Park
• Mt. Spokane Sno-Park

• Gold Creek Sno-Park

If you’re a skiier, you may also enjoy gliding along the groomed trails at Hyak or Mount Spokane. All three of these parks offer snowshoeing opportunities.

Sno-Park passes are required for parking. You can choose between a One-day or Seasonal permit. If you have the Seasonal permit, you’ll also need the Special Groomed Trail permit for Hyak and Mount Spokane, no matter what activities you participate in.

Winter Weekend Events

Maybe guided hikes are more your style. Washington State Parks has a calendar full of scheduled winter events in state parks to choose from. Join a knowledgeable park ranger for a leisurely stroll through the old-growth forests of Deception Pass or take in the stunning views of Lake Wenatchee on a guided snowshoe hike. 

For those looking for a bit of a challenge, the Spokane Langlauf on February 2nd offers a unique opportunity to participate in a cross-country ski race right in the heart of the city.

Winter Camping 

For true winter and camping lovers, why not spend a weekend under the stars at one of our state parks still taking reservations for winter camping? Pitch your tent or get a cabin at Dash Point State Park. Rasar State Park has campsites and Ariondack-style shelters up for grabs. For a cozy experience, book a yurt or cabin at Twin Harbors.
