Education Programs: Journey to the Parks Virtual Field Trips

We are proud to highlight our successful Journey to the Parks program.

At a cost of $1.92 per student we provided over 15,600 school kids with education programs and virtual field trips to state parks where they learned from experts in orca behavior and marine ecology.

Our goals are to teach science at state parks and encourage kids to explore the outdoors.Most of the participants live far from Puget Sound or come from families that lack resources to travel and camp at state parks.

Teachers reported, “For these students, many of which have never been out of Spokane, all was new.…My students have never been to the ocean —to see it up front and explore was a very educational and exciting experience…They were excited to be able to ask questions and see different sea life.”

Though the use of satellite technology 86 classrooms from across Washington and the Northwest interacted live with teachers in the field.

Students explored the tidepools of Penrose Point State Park and learned about orca behavior from a viewing stage at Lime Kiln Point State Park.

We are pleased to partner with Inspired Classroom and GCI Technology who coordinated the interactive distance learning and satellite technology and local nonprofits Harbor WildWatch and Killer Whale Tales who shared their expertise in Puget Sound Tidal Zones and orca whales.
